Coalition for Cognitive Accessibility

A research initiative to study how unique cognitive abilities, learning proficiencies, and rates of neuro-diversity impact workers’ mental health and overall project outcomes in the construction industry.

Our research aims to address the unique cognitive, learning, and communication needs of the construction workforce in large-scale infrastructure and EPC projects. Preliminary findings suggest that this demographic exhibits distinct characteristics compared to the general population, including variations in cognitive abilities, learning proficiencies, and rates of neurodivergence. These differences are believed to contribute to higher rates of mental health issues and impact project outcomes.

Our study seeks to establish a baseline understanding of these characteristics and explore the implications for communication and management tools within the construction industry. We hypothesize that current tools are not adequately tailored to the needs of this workforce, leading to inefficiencies, safety risks, and decreased worker motivation.

A key component of our research is the development of a visual design and storytelling platform that converts traditional work instructions into visual narratives. This tool aims to bridge the communication gap between engineers and construction workers, ensuring that complex designs are understandable and accurately translated into construction practices.

By fostering a more inclusive and effective communication environment, we anticipate improvements in project efficiency, worker engagement, mental health, and overall project success. We believe that this research has the potential to revolutionize the construction industry by providing a deeper understanding of the workforce's needs and developing tools that cater to these needs.
